"Market of Hearts" at the Cathedral Square (Domplatte)

The most beautiful and undoubtedly most famous Christmas market—featuring a magnificent backdrop, splendidly decorated pavilions, and the Rhineland’s largest Christmas tree—is located right in front of Cologne Cathedral. Here, visitors can explore around 150 stalls offering Christmas treats and handicrafts. Open from November 16 to December 23, 2026.

"Market of Angels" at Neumarkt

Another highlight awaits visitors at the Christmas market on Neumarkt, known as the "Market of Angels." Cologne’s oldest Christmas market, situated in the city center, charms visitors with hundreds of star-shaped lights in the trees and decorative oak-wood stars. The market is defined by its elaborately designed stalls in natural tones, angel figures, and Christmas wreaths. Around 1,000 light elements transform the otherwise bustling Neumarkt into a place of peace and contemplation. The angels strolling through the aisles are a particular highlight for children. The Market of Angels is open from November 16 to December 23, 2026.

St. Nicholas Village at Rudolfplatz

Set against a historic backdrop and imbued with a touch of magic, the St. Nicholas Village—designed for visitors of all ages—is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere and transports guests to a charming hamlet of small half-timbered houses. Highlights include the village chapel, a nativity scene created by local children and teenagers, and a video installation featuring "Niko" the puppet, who tells the story of Saint Nicholas. The St. Nicholas House offers learning opportunities for everyone—from children and teens to adults—showcasing a diverse range of works by Cologne-based artists, authors, and craftspeople. Visitors can enjoy crafting, painting, and listening to stories together—all free of charge. The market is open from November 16 to December 23, 2026.

Heinzelmännchen Christmas Market in the Old Town

A festive atmosphere also fills the air at the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares. Known as the "Heinzelmännchen Market" (named after the legendary "house gnomes" of Cologne), it draws on the myth of these helpful spirits who once assisted the city's guilds—baking bread for bakers, sewing clothes for tailors, or holding hot iron for blacksmiths. Reflecting this lore, the market’s winding lanes are organized by theme. Whether you are looking for handicrafts, tasty treats, or toys, there is something here for everyone. A special highlight is the ice-skating experience, where visitors of all ages can enjoy the rink or try their hand at *Eisstockschießen* (Bavarian curling). The market is open from November 23 to December 23, 2026.

Cologne Harbour Christmas Market
At this unique Christmas market—featuring pagoda-style tents and peaked roofs right next to the Chocolate Museum—visitors experience a Mediterranean-style market themed around the harbour, shipping, and the city of Cologne itself. Beyond the usual Christmas market fare, the roughly 80 stalls offer a special focus on maritime cuisine: gourmet fish specialties prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, flame-grilled salmon, and fish sandwiches from authentic Hamburg fish market vendors. Mulled beer and *Feuerzangenbowle* (flaming punch) are served from a 15-meter, three-masted wooden ship and a lighthouse-themed tavern. Staying true to the theme, the stall staff are dressed in sailor attire. On Advent weekends, visitors can also meet various artisans. For those looking for a truly unique experience, there is the option of a "trial wedding," where Captain Ippach officiates a ceremony in front of the large wooden three-masted ship. The marriage is made official with a certificate—though it lasts for only 24 hours. The market is open from November 13, 2026, to January 3, 2027.

Stadtgarten Christmas Market

Located in the Belgian Quarter, this Christmas market features around 90 exhibitors showcasing lifestyle products, modern designs, traditional craftsmanship, and nostalgic trinkets. It is well worth multiple visits, as the exhibitors and stalls change on a weekly basis. There is never a dull moment here—thanks in part to the lively and varied program of events on the Christmas stage. Opening dates: November 13 – December 23, 2026.
