Fort X Cologne
Fort X in Cologne is one of the city's best-preserved Prussian fortifications and is located in the Agnesviertel district (Neustadt-Nord) on the Neusser Wall. Today, it is primarily known for its idyllic rose garden, which was created on the former defensive ramparts.
The Rose Garden: It boasts approximately 2,000 roses of over 70 different varieties and is considered a green oasis in the heart of the city.
Architecture: The complex was built between 1819 and 1825 and is the only fort from the first construction phase whose original overall design is still clearly recognizable.
Recreation: In addition to the rose garden, the grounds include parkland and playgrounds, making it a popular destination for local residents.
Address: Neusser Wall 33, 50670 Cologne.
Opening hours (rose garden): Open seasonally from May 1st to October 31st, daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (until 7:00 p.m. in October).
Admission: Access to the grounds and the rose garden is free.
Getting there: Best reached by KVB lines 16 and 18 (Reichenspergerplatz stop), from there it is about a 7-minute walk.
Fort X is also part of the Cologne Fortress Trail, which brings the city's military history to life.
